Lawn size calculator

Break the yard into simple shapes, subtract what isn't grass, and get the mowable area in square feet and acres.

Faster: measure it from the address

Yardclaw measures the lawn, driveway and walkways of a property from satellite imagery in about a minute, and shows the outline on a map so you can check it. Five measurements are free, with no card.

How to measure a lawn by hand

  1. Sketch the property and split the grass into rectangles, triangles and circles. Front and back yards are usually one or two rectangles each.
  2. Measure each shape with a measuring wheel or a long tape. Pacing works in a pinch if you know your stride.
  3. Add the shapes, then subtract anything inside them that isn't grass.

One acre is 43,560 square feet.

Lot size is not lawn size

The lot size on a property listing or tax record includes the house, garage, driveway, patio and beds. The mowable lawn is only part of that, and the share varies a lot from one property to the next. If you are pricing mowing, fertilizing or aeration, measure the turf.

For lawn care businesses

Walking every property with a wheel doesn't scale past a handful of quotes a week. Measuring from aerial imagery lets you quote from the office, and keeping the measured outline with the quote gives the client something to look at when they ask where the number came from.
